Kia Gear Up: Day 2 – Challenge Course on Castelloli Circuit (Main Event)

Kia Gear Up

After a 7-minute bus ride, we had arrived to the other side of the Castelloli Circuit. The moment I got off, I could see the hardworking camera crew were busy setting up their drones at the top of the building. There were other directors and producers scouting the circuit and directed their staff the good spots to capture the moments.

Kia Gear Up

In front of me, I could see the start/finish line. The spot where I stood was the pit stop. Inside the garage, there were stools, tables, another pop up lounge and video game stations that were nicely setup by the Kia Gear Up team. Also, I saw two stylish modified Kia Pro_cee’d hatchbacks parked in front of the garage. As I chatted with one of the Kia staff and they told me the sporty Pro_cee’d is not available in the North America market. Instead, Pro_cee’d is the high end trim level version of the regular Cee’d hatchback sold in Europe. I guess in North America they had the Forte Koup so they may think it would be redundant if they import the Pro_cee’d. But honestly, I hope one day the Kia management would highly re-consider bringing in the Pro_cee’d, it’s a beautiful ride. After a nice short chat, I let the Kia staff get back to work. The Kia Gear Up Team had to inspect the modified Kia Pro_cee’d vehicles. As I glanced inside both vehicles, you could see the interiors were very bare. They stripped down the back seats and all the features that aren’t necessary in a racing vehicle to reduce weight. You could see the recaro racing seats were installed on both sides of the front seats. Racing seat belts were installed as well. Plus, a safety racing cage with fire extinguisher was found in the vehicle. At the end of the day, it’s nice to have fun and experience the speed of the Kia vehicles, but Kia puts everyone in safety first, that’s their top priority.

One of the executives gathered us around in circles and gave us a briefing on what to expect in the upcoming challenge exercises. So, all the Global Ambassadors simply were chilling in the garage and waited for their turn for various challenge exercises.

Kia Gear Up

Challenge #1: Professional Racing Drivers Stunt Show

To start off the circuit challenge exercise, Kia Gear Up team decided to warm us up with a Stunt Show Demonstration. Motor Racing Champion, Manfred Stohl and another Motor Racing Driver, Sandra Yelamos sat in the two Kia Pro_cee’ds and demonstrated to us their rally racing skills. The drifts and stunts that we often seen in movies were actually happening in front of our eyes. I love the engine sound, the speed, the drifting & the tire burning sounds added the adrenaline to my veins. My favourite part was when two cars were parked in spot #1 and #3 and the Kia Pro_cee’d drifted & slid into spot #2 (right in between car #1 and #3). That was spectacular!

Challenge #2: Circuit Taxi Course

In order to ensure the Global Ambassadors were familiarize with the circuit course, each of us were assigned to sit in the passenger side of the race car and be driven by the Motor Racing Driver to go over the entire circuit. This challenge exercise allowed us to experience what a professional racing driver can do with the modified car under high speeds. At the same time, we got to familiarize with the circuit course.

When it was my turn, my heart started to pump a little bit. I sat in the passenger recaro racing seat. The seat provided lots of lumbar and lateral support. I felt the seat wrapped around my entire body to give me the most protection and comfort. Then, the Kia Gear Up staff slowly placed the seatbelts around me. The recaro seats didn’t use our normal 3-point side seatbelt. Instead, it had 2 seatbelts that secure my body in place. The driver smiled at me and asked if I was ready. “Hell ya, let’s do this!” Vroom! Vroom! We left the pit stop and onto race course. The first turn was ok, I could handle it as the car was still gaining up speed. But in turn 2 and 3, you could feel the high speed of the ride, the g-force was in effect. I could see the driver were busy shifting up & down through the turns. The apex section was fun and it was really cool, feeling the acceleration of the vehicle and what Kia engineering was capable of doing. I told myself I will follow the Kia Racing Team in the near future to see how they flare in the racing circuit. There were quite a number of twisty roads and turns at the Castelloli Circuit and after about 2 minutes, we were back into the pit stop for the next Ambassador.

It was definitely an amazing experience and I could tell you that I respect a race car driver alot. It’s definitely a sport as the driver has to be alert at all times and analyze their actions in high speed. Every decision can make or break the race car results or even their lives. The ride was definitely more fun than a roller coaster ride in a theme park.

Challenge #3: Speed Racing Course

After every Global Ambassador took their turns sitting in the passenger seat, experiencing the high speed taxi style exercise, we were asked to take turns going through the speed course. This time, it’s our turn to be on the driver’s seat. My time has finally come! I got to drive this Kia Pro_cee’d! Again, the friendly Kia Gear Up Crew helped put the seat belts for me. Safety first! As everything was ready, off we go into the circuit. In my helmet, I could hear the instructions made by the professional driver. In real life, that’s how the rally team works, the engine and speed were so loud that they rely on the microphones to communicate with each other inside the car. The professional driver informed me what gear to shift when making the next turn, when to brake and when the turn was coming. He even informed me if the next turn was going to be a hard or a soft turn. At first, I was a bit skeptical pushing the limit of the car but as I got more comfortable shifting up & down through the course, I decided to push the pedal a little bit harder, just to experience what it was like to go through the turns at higher speed. The feeling was so refreshing. It was fun, moving in and out, left and right through the course. It was so satisfying!

Finale: A Certificate of Completion

After every Ambassador had their little fun on the speed circuit, we were gathered again and the staff congratulated us for our job well done on all the challenges. At the same time, totally unexpected, they had prepared a Kia Gear Up Certificate of Completion for each of us. Everyone cheer for each other when our name was called. When I received mine, I could see my name, my country of origin as well as my race car driver picture (that was taken earlier during the day) on the certificate. This Certificate of Completion signified that we had gone through the various challenges and exercises throughout the entire Kia Gear Up Challenge.

Kia Gear Up

I found this Kia Gear Up Challenge very helpful and worthwhile because I was able to discover more about myself, push the limits under a safe and closed course environment to learn better driving skills. I got to do exercises that I normally wouldn’t have the chance to do it on our own. Also, we got to learn all the latest safety technologies that Kia vehicles had to offer. I would say, this Kia Gear Up Challenge is an once-in-a-lifetime experience for me that I will never forget. I know full well that not everyone has the opportunity to wear a racing outfit with the helmet & be able to drive a race car in a real circuit. That doesn’t come often. I would like to thank Kia Motors and Kia Canada for the kind hospitality and the precious opportunity to have me experience such an amazing Kia Gear Up Campaign.

Before we left for our bus, the entire Kia Gear Up Team, including the Global Ambassadors, Buddies, Executives went to the start/finish line to pose for group photos for a good memory.

Stay tuned for my next MoVernie BLOG as we headed back to the city of Barcelona to attend a nice restaurant for a “Life Talk” dinner at El Principal.

Kia Sorento EX V6 – MoVernie 1st Drive

FullSizeRender (2)

Picking up this sick ride at the Kia Motors Headquarter

Ever since I test drove a number of Kia vehicles during my Kia Gear Up Experience in Barcelona, Spain this past May, I have always wanted to test drive more Kia vehicles when I am back in Canada. And this wish list came true this past week when Kia Canada had graciously provided me with a brand new 2016 Kia Sorento EX V6 (mid-size SUV) for me to be on the MOVE. A super great way to test drive a Kia vehicle on July 1st as part of the Canada Day celebration!

Personally, I really like the looks of the 2016 Kia Sorento, which is totally brand new with a nice front view, side view and rear view. No matter what angle you look at this vehicle, it looks good. In this particular EX V6 trim level, it comes with a 3.3L V6 that pumps out a powerful 290 hp and 252 lbs-ft of torque. In addition, it comes with 7 seats (which isn’t always available in other competitors). The long panoramic sunroof impressed me the most as it allowed lots of sunlight into the cabin, lighten up the mood and creating a joyful atmosphere throughout the whole journey.

So far so good with the 2016 Kia Sorento. For now, I will provide you with my first drive impression of this Kia Sorento. At a later time, I will have a more in-depth detail of my test driving experience with it.

Check out some of the photos that I snapped both exterior and interior photos of this Kia Sorento.

#NAIAS: Ford Focus ST – All in the Ford Performance Family (2015 Detroit Auto Show)

pick

As I was attending the 2015 Detroit North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), one of the biggest highlights was the Ford Press Conference, announcing 3 all-new Ford vehicles in the Ford GT, Shelby GT350R and F-150 Raptor. Although these 3 vehicles were the highlights of the Press Conference and stole the Detroit NAIAS, there were two other Ford vehicles that accompanied these all-new 3 vehicles at the event. They were the Ford Focus ST and Ford Fiesta ST. Both were high performance, fine-tuned hot hatchbacks that were launched before the 2015 calendar year.

Although the focus were on the Ford GT and the other all-new products, I have not forgotten the important role these hatchbacks play in the Ford Performance team. If Ford GT is the father of the Ford Performance family, then Focus ST and Fiesta ST is like the son and daughter of the Ford Performance family, each attracting a different crowd of peeps. I have a thing for hot hatchbacks. They are nimble, stylish and hatchbacks just give the vehicle a different twist to it. A lot of peeps would associate hatchbacks as being fuel efficient, economical, relatively cheaper in price and driving from Point A to Point B. Most of the time, that is true BUT there are peeps out there such as myself who loves compact size hatchbacks that deliver superior power & performance and the nimble handling that brings along with the “fun to drive” factor that allow me to manoeuvre around the busy downtown core with ease.

34343434343

At the Press Conference, while everyone was busy snapping pictures of the Ford GT and Shelby GT350R, my eyes focused (no pun intended) were all-over the Ford Focus ST. Personally, I would choose the bright yellow body paint on the Focus ST because it’s just me. I love colours that stand out, energetic and fashionably different. However, the signature Ford Blue Oval body paint looked quite good on the Focus ST as well. Let me tell you, any blue body paint, from aqua baby blue to electric neon blue or the blue oval paint that were seen in almost every car companies vehicles at the Detroit NAIAS looked great. Let me assure you that blue colour will be the “next hot thing” on cars. It will be the next popular colour trend in the next few years.

st

Under the hood, Focus ST is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that generates 252 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. That, my peeps, is a lot of engine power under the hood for a compact hatch. That’s the way I like it! I would love to give this ride a spin this summer when I go on my next road trip to cover events outside of Toronto.

For now, you can catch a glimpse of the engine sound of the Focus ST with the video that I captured when I was at Ford Press Conference at Detroit NAIAS. Check out the pictures as well. Next time when you see the big poster picture of the Ford GT standing in the middle and next to it were the Shelby GT350R and F-150 Raptor? You know the 4th and 5th car beside them were the Focus ST and Fiesta ST. All in the blue-oval family, delivering the Ford Performance for any one with different tastes and needs.

MoVernie #FORDNAIAS Exclusive Media Trip – Day 2 (Itinerary)

I was invited by Ford Canada to attend the 2015 Ford North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) Digital Summit. It’s an Exclusive VIP Event where the Digital Influencers from around the world get to meet together and cover one of the largest North American Auto Shows in Detroit. I was among the lucky 21 Canadian Digital Influencers representing Canada, while the rest came from United States and around the world internationally.

It’s a 3-day Media Trip Event. A few days ago, I showed the summary of my Ford NAIAS Day-1 Itinerary, today, I will show you my Ford NAIAS Day-2 Itinerary. Day 2 of the Ford NAIAS included an exclusive bus ride to the famous Joe Louis Arena, which is home of the storied of the NHL franchise, Detroit Red Wings. Ford has its own big space to launch their products at the Detroit NAIAS. That’s how important and much respect Ford has to the Detroit NAIAS.

Day 2 – Ford NAIAS Media Trip

1) Woke up nice and early from a good night sleep at the Westin Hotel, located & connected straight to the Detroit Airport. Must be the comfy bed and sheets that made the sleep so great!

2) Got dressed and took my Ford NAIAS name tag and the 2015 Official Detroit NAIAS Media Credential with me.

787678

3) Met up with the rest of the Ford Digital Influencers for a buffet breakfast that was provided by Ford. There was even a “Made-to-order Omelette” Station! Awesome!

4) Hop on the tour bus provided by Ford and go straight to the Joe Louis Arena for the Ford Press Conference. Joe Louis Arena is located beside the famous Cobo Centre, where the Detroit NAIAS are held. Inside the Joe Louis Arena, this was where Ford had the entire space for them to showcase their all-new products in front of the media and digital influencers included myself.

5) Ford first unveiled the all-new 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor pickup.

IMG_6479

6) Then, Ford unveiled the 2016 Ford Shelby GT 350R high-performance sports car.

IMG_6527

7) And the third Ford vehicle that was unveiled in front of my eyes was the super car, Ford GT, a twin-turbo, mid-engine, 3.5L Ecoboost V6 that pumps out about 600 hp! These are amazing numbers and engineering designs!

45454

8) After the Ford Press Conference was over, we were invited to walk on the stage to have an upclose & personal look at the 3 new products that Ford just unveiled.

3355335

9) I took pictures and videos of the 3 hot rides and watched them slowly driven off the stage so that the drivers could get the vehicles back to the Ford display at the Detroit Auto Show.

10) I walked through the indoor path that led me from the Joe Louis Arena and into the Cobo Centre where I was headed to the Ford Auto Show “Headquarter” called the “Blue Oval. The Blue Oval was huge, food and beverages were served for us. Portable smart phones charger were available for busy and active digital influencers like myself to charge my smart phones so that I can communicate and share pictures and videos with my followers and audiences.

Untitled

343343

11) There were lots to do at the Ford Blue Oval. Peeps can visit the Innovation Park that Ford built at the centre of the Blue Oval area, it was built with trees, plants, grass and flowers to make it a very “green environment” for people to relax. Very thoughtful & design by Ford as they want to remind us that Ford takes the environment seriously and will do whatever it takes to reduce fuel emmisions and pollutants on our planet.

34343

12) I stood near the 3 Ford stages as the 3 all-new products, Ford GT, Shelby GT 350R & F-150 Raptor were driven from the Joe Louis Arena and they need to put on the stages at the Ford Display.

545454

12) Lots of InterActive Seminars and Q & A Panels for Ford Executives and the media to interact and discuss topics from the environment, innovative mobility in the world, interaction between President & CEO, Mark Fields with the University Students, the importance of Generation Z for the automotive industry, and much much more.

78787

13) I took the tour bus back to my hotel so that I could refresh, relax and recharge and all dressed up for the special evening. The special event was held back at the Cobo Centre, where the Ford Blue Oval was transformed into DJ music and dinner. Bascially, having an event right at the Detroit NAIAS.

533544

14) Executives from Xbox was on hand to announce its collaboration of designing a video game that is specifically cater to the all-new Ford GT Super car. They talked about the importance of the Automotive Industry with the Gaming Industry and how automotive enthusiasts & gamers were connected hand-in-hand.

3w3424

15) Took the tour bus back to the hotel. And that means more Tweeting, Instagramming and Facebooking at the hotel.

16) Sleeping time.

#NAIAS: 2017 Ford GT – The Sound of the Engine at Ford Press Conference (Detroit Auto Show)

The 2017 Ford GT Super car is definitely a BIG hit at the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). It is one of the best looking car at the show. Every one wants to know more details and its specs and everyone is hoping this super car will be a production car. This car attracts so much attention even the Cy Young Pitcher of Detroit Tigers, Justin Verlander instagrammed (see photo below) & asked Ford how he can get on the list to get one of the Ford GTs. That’s how crazy it was!

I was very lucky to be in attendance at the Ford Press Conference to witness the entire debut of the all-new Ford GT. I love the engine sound and the way it looks. A lot of media and publications have already posted many angles of this super car, but let me share this exclusive video with you when I taped a video capturing the driver starting up the Ford GT engine and began to drive this ride into the backstage.

The Ford GT engine is like the sound of music = LOVELY

Enjoy! You are welcome 🙂
