Gallery: Marianas Trench “Never Say Die” Tour

Hi Peeps! As you have read my previous MoVernie BLOG on my adventures at the Marianas Trench “Never Say Die” tour that was held at Air Canada Centre (ACC) last month, I had taken lots of amazing photos up close and personal near the stage and other areas of the venue. Yes, I worked very hard, ALWAYS on the MOVE to bring you the best photos of your favourite band.

Below is a gallery of photos that I took at the Marianas Trench Concert. Hope you enjoy them.

Marianas Trench “Never Say Die” Tour – Air Canada Centre (Toronto Stop)

Marianas Trench, a well-established Canadian rock band was on a “Never Say Die” Tour in the past few months, making stops in many American and Canadian cities. Whether the cities were big ones or small ones, Marianas Trench made every effort to ensure its fans from all parts of the countries a chance to get up close and personal with them.

For those who wanted to know more about Marianas Trench, it’s a rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia that was formed in 2001. The band consists of members Josh Ramsay, Matt Webb, Mike Ayley, and Ian Casselman. This band has been in the music industry for 15 years and counting.

Personally, I am a huge fan of Marianas Trench, they are lovable, down-to-earth real, funny, cool, hip and really have its own unique character. Most importantly, this band has never ran out of music creativity, I have seen this band evolve over the years, thinking of new images, new ideas, new music direction, giving its fans something new to discover about the band while maintaining its own roots. That’s not easy to do for many bands but Marianas Trench just gets it done. In particular, I really like the singles called “One Love” and “Fallout“. You could hear the lyrics and how passionate Josh Ramsey interpreted in these songs. This band has so much to offer and so many hit singles that their fan base just continue to grow and grow.

Last month, I was very fortunate to be invited to cover and review the Marianas Trench “Never Say Die” Concert at the Air Canada Centre (ACC) in its Toronto stop. Another great Canadian band, Walk Off The Earth did the opening for them for the entire tour. It was a perfect choice to have them to open for the Marianas Trench. In particular, I really like one of their latest song called “Rule the World”, it’s just so powerful, strong instrumental music and just full of energy. And to be able to hear them live was a total pleasure. They had definitely hyped up the crowd that evening. I wish Walk Off The Earth best of luck and continue to pump out great music and hopefully, I will see them have their own tour in the near future.

The set list told us that the Marianas Trench concert will begin at 8:50 pm. To my surprise, the band was right on time. Wait, let me re-phrase this. The reason I was super surprised because most concerts that I been to in the past, they would never be on time, with some artists showing up 40 minutes later. Not for Marianas Trench, they didn’t want their fans to wait too long and suffer, thus, they began on time.

The background display of virtual images, lights and music were what made a live concert fun and entertaining. There is no comparison watching the concert live than by watching it on TV at home, it’s a total different experience. Josh Ramsey, as usual came out wearing flashy outfits, holding up his guitar and began jumping up and down throughout the stage. His fellow members positioned themselves at different places throughout the stage, playing their respective instruments.

The crowd at the ACC were jam packed, they were screaming, jumping up and down, moving their bodies along with the music. The vibe was awesome. You could see lots of young ladies, kids accompanied by parents were all singing along every song.

Marianas Trench released its latest album (Astoria) back in October of 2015 and they performed many of the songs from this album, including Astoria, One Love, Never Say Die and many more.

As you know, MoVernie is ALWAYS on the MOVE, so I took some shots from my seats and I also got to experience what a concert was like standing close the stage. I got to take lots of closeup photos (check them out below), so that I can share with you guys.

There was a few highlights that stick in my mind during the Marianas Trench concert. The moment when Josh came down the stage from the centre spot, he ran along the barricades and I was able to see him up close and personal, that was a memory to remember. He basically went around the arena and high-five the fans along the way. You could see how excited the fans were. Some even cried after they shook hands with Josh. Another highlight was when Josh went to the centre floor area, go onto the platform, sat down beside the piano and began to play the song “One Love” in piano version. That was really cool! Last but not least, Josh tied himself on a zip line wire and zipped across the stage in mid-air, singing songs while doing acrobats. That’s multi-tasking folks! All those spins moves and moving upside down in mid-air? Josh made it look so easy. I would have thought that flying mid-air, spinning around will affect his breathing or singing. Nope! Not a chance, he was flawless, smooth breathing and he maintained his great vocal.

You could tell this band appreciates their fans greatly. Throughout the concert, the band thanked the fans for their support. I recalled at one point, Josh said, “Thank you all of you for your continual support, without you guys, we won’t be able to last this long. We have our own tour across Canada and U.S.A. We have our own show at the ACC. I recalled 10 plus years ago, when we were performing at a tavern, there maybe only a handful who showed up. Thank you for your love”. I thought that was a powerful speech. I mean, think about it, imagine yourself performing on a stage at a tavern and only a handful show up and 10 plus years later, a jam-packed crowd at the ACC? That’s something to be proud of.

Also during the show, Josh thanked the parents who bought tickets and accompanied with their kids. He said, “Thanks to the parents who came here with your kids. Now, let me teach you a lesson, Pop 101”. The crowd cheered as Pop 101 is one of the band’s songs.

One of the perks of being able to stand near the stage was the opportunity for me to observe how the behind-the-scenes work crew operated throughout the concert. Staff members consistently had to move equipment along the stage, setting up visual effects and coordinating with each other to ensure safety comes first and everything was working. Special shoutout to the hardworking staff members that we often negectled but played an important role to the success of the show.

Did you know that the band used more than one guitar for the entire show? I honestly don’t play instruments myself. It was fascinating to see an entire row of guitars being placed underneath the stage and the staff members carefully placed them in specific orders. They also hand out different guitars to the band members for certain part of the performance. That was interesting.

All-in-all, I had an amazing time at the Marianas Trench Concert. They have come a long way to establish themselves and built such a large following of fans around the world. I think it’s not easy for a Canadian band to be able to build such a successful brand in both the U.S. and Canada markets but they did it!

I will definitely go to the next Marianas Trench concert. If you haven’t watch them in person, I highly recommend you buy tickets to watch them in the near future and also buy their latest album, Astoria.

Special thanks to Live Nation and Strut Entertainment for giving me such a wonderful Exclusive VIP experience at the Marianas Trench Concert in Toronto.

Ontario Music Fund Showcase – MOD Club

Two weeks ago, the MoVernie Crew was invited by the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) to cover the special Ontario Music Fund Showcase that was held at the MOD Club.

So, what was this event about? It was an event to celebrate Ontario’s music industry success supported by the Ontario Music Fund (OMF). There are a lot of Canadian talent in our beautiful country. However, as we all know, in order for the talent to shine, not only they have to be creative, have their unique talent and skills but more importantly having luck and financial support. This is what Ontario Music Fund (OMF) comes in.

The purpose of OMF is aimed at strengthening and stimulating growth in Ontario’s music companies and supporting this growing sector. The Fund is designed to drive activity and investment and to support Ontario’s music companies and organizations in expanding their economic and cultural footprints within Canada and around the world. OMF plays an important role to provide financial support and a platform for the Canadian talent to shine.

And at this Ontario Music Fund Showcase, Canadian talent who were funded by various OMF projects over the past 3 years were able to perform to the crowd.

The host of the evening was Jully Black. Jully Black is a Canadian R&B singer–songwriter and actress. She has collaborated and written for many artists, including Nas, Saukrates, Choclair, Kardinal Offishall, Destiny’s Child and Sean Paul. Jully is very active in Canada, always being there to show her love and support in promoting Canadian Music.

Performers at the Ontario Music Fund Showcase included Monster Truck; A Tribe Called Red; SATE; Mehdi Cayenne; and Peter Katz.

I was constantly on the MOVE that evening covering various events that I was only able to check out performers Peter Katz and SATE but man oh man, they were talented. Amazing vocals and amazing live stage presence.

I wish these performers best of luck with their careers and also a shoutout to the on-going support by the OMDC for their continual financial and structural support in the development of OMF-funded projects and discovery of Canadian Talent.

Jian Ghomeshi – Not Guilty

A judge has found former CBC Radio host Jian Ghomeshi not guilty of sex assault and choking charges.

There was a large crowd of people waiting outside the Old City Hall in Toronto right after the verdict has been announced. The crowd included the public, the media and a large group of protesters who chanted “We believe survivors!”.

The Crown then came out and proceeded to the podium and addressed to the media about the Jian Ghomeshi case.

And Jian Ghomeshi, along with his lawyer, came out from the back door of the Old City Hall and walked into the Lincoln Town Car without speaking to anyone.

MoVernie & his crew were there providing you with photos and videos on this Jian Ghomeshi case.

NBA All-Star Weekend – Setting Up

Today is on Monday, I had decided to make a walk after work, just to see if there’s any happening at the Air Canada Centre (ACC). As predicted, while the Toronto Raptors were playing against the Pistons in Detroit, the hardworking ACC staffs was already busy setting up the 2016 NBA All-Star Game, to be played this weekend in Toronto. This is the first time that the NBA Festivity is held outside of the United States.

I walked around Gate 2 and saw an artwork on the ground. It’s a beautiful piece resembling the official NBA All-Star Game logo. I also walked into the Real Sports Apparel, just to see what type of merchandize was in there. Wow! Almost the entire store was full of NBA All-Star merchandize, but be prepare to bring your fat wallet because everything isn’t cheap. A snapback was around $31.99 + tax.

As I walked around outside of the ACC, near the Gate 5, where the giant jumbotron was located, I saw the staffs was starting to put the images of the NBA All-Star players who will be participating in the game. In particular, I got a bit emotional when our very own Toronto Raptors, DeMar DeRozan’s image was slowing putting up the window wall. To me, it was a defying moment for me to stand from afar and saw his image on the window wall. We have a winning team who is currently 2nd place in the Eastern Conference. We got a player in Kyle Lowry who was voted in as the starting PG for the Eastern Conference. In total, we have 2 Toronto Raptors representing Toronto, actually, the entire Canada and will be participating in the NBA All-Star game on home soil.

I am super excited right now. I have never had these much Goosebumps before, not interviewing celebrities or game 7 of a playoff game. But this once-in-a-lifetime experience will be unforgettable in my memory!

Go Raptors! Go NBA All-Star Weekend! Go Toronto! Go Canada!

Follow me on Instagram (@RealMoVernie) and Twitter (@MoVernie) as I will be posting awesome photos and videos throughout the entire NBA All-Star Weekend. Stay tuned!

Skittles Holiday Pawn Shop – Trade in Your Unwanted Holiday Gifts for Skittles

A survey conducted by Skittles (yes, the candy) indicated that nearly three quarters of Canadians expect to receive at least one unwanted holiday gift this year. As we all know, every year, we will expect to receive something that is either redundant or something we just have no use for it. We also know many of us will re-wrap the unwanted gifts and re-gift them to other people. You don’t have to admit it but we all know we have re-gifted something during our life time. There is no shame about that. It’s better to re-gift to someone who may have good use to them than seeing the gifts left untouched or seeing it being thrown into a garbage can.

The Skittles Team has done something creative and unique for this holiday season. They have created an actual Skittles Holiday Pawn Shop (located at 242 Queen Street West),that will allow you to trade in any of you unwanted holiday gifts in exchange for packs and packs of Skittles. Whether you are a kid or an adult, majority of us love Skittles. With this Skittles initiative, we don’t even have to waste time re-wrapping gifts and re-gift. Better yet, all of the unwanted holiday gifts will be donated to Goodwill in Scarborough. You get Skittles in return for a good cause supporting charity. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.

So, how does it work? Yesterday, it was the first day the Skittles Pawn Shop was opened, so MoVernie was on the MOVE to check it out. It was located at 242 Queen Street West (right across the Much Music Building). It’s accessible on foot, by subway, streetcar or driving, so the spot was a good prime time location. And you won’t miss the store because they have friendly Skittles staff, all dressed in sharp Skittles red colour winter jacket and red toque, so it was very easy to find.

A friendly doorman opened the door for us and I could see all the nice unwanted gifts were on display, hanging on the walls and on the counters. Then, we saw this energetic Skittles Pawn Shop guy named Dale. He dressed in a nicely tailored blue suit and dress pants with a nice burgundy bowtie. Before you even see his face, you could hear Dale’s voice. You could feel his energy even at the end of the line.

After 5-7 minutes wait, it was my turn. I noticed Dale had two other helpers to assist him. I noticed the two helpers were piling up packs and packs of Skittles that filled up the entire counter. I could even smell the Skittles even though they were unopened in the packs. I handed Dale my ugly sweater, Rubbermaid water bottle and a pouch bag. Dale consulted with his helpers and discussed how many packs of Skittles I should be entitled to. After a minute, Dale came up with his offer. He offered me 15 packs of Skittles for my ugly sweater. Another 30 packs of Skittles for my Rubbermaid water bottle and my pouch bag. That’s a total of 45 packs of Skittles! I was satisfied so I shook Dale’s hand. Done deal! The lovely Skittles helpers placed the 45 packs of Skittles into two transparent bags. It was quite a fun experience. Lots of peeps just took out their own smart phones and started recording their interactions with Dale for memories and share with their friends.

I decided to stay in the store for a little bit longer just to see what other peeps bring to trade in for Skittles. I saw all kinds of good stuff such as Blue-Ray DVDs, beach gear, toys, figurines, ball cap and much much more. Some wacky items such as un-used Band-Aid and a hotel pen were also traded in. The most I saw a family donated a box of good stuff and they got 100 packs of Skittles. That was incredible. You should see the smile on the children’s faces. I spoke to the parents, they said they thought this Skittles Pawn Shop concept was a unique one. They brought their kids down to the store so that they understand the process of bargaining and negotiating goods. Most importantly, they want their children not to take things for granted but instead realizing there are alot of unfortunate people out there who couldn’t afford their items and would find these items useful. They want their kids to learn to give back to the communities and learn to support charity at a young age. Kudos to the parents.

This Skittles Pawn Shop will continue to open until December 30th, with business hours starting from 10 am to 6pm. So, you have plenty of time to make your way down to 242 Queen Street West.

SkittlesPawn SkittlesPawn

My MoVernie Spies have informed me that YouTube Sensation, Lilly Singh will be at the Skittles Pawn Shop tomorrow (December 28th) from 10am to 11:30 am. The first 150 people lining up outside the Skittles Pawn Shop will get wristband to meet & greet Lilly.

In case you wonder, “But what if I live far and can’t make it in person to the Pawn Shop to trade up”? No worries, the Skittles Team got you covered. You simply go to the site. Snap a photo of your unwanted gift, upload it to the site. They will evaluate your item instantly in seconds and they will let you know how many packs of Skittles you can get from the unwanted item. A coupon is generated with the picture of your unwanted gift. Simply go to any store that sells Skittles and present them with the coupon with the scan code and you get $2.00 off your pack of Skittles (check the fine print of the size of the Skittles that are applicable to this offer). Best yet? This coupon is valid for anyone who lives in Canada. So, you could be living in Vancouver or Nova Scotia, you can participate online and print out the coupons and apply it anywhere in Canada. That’s a genius idea by the Skittles Team.

Have fun! Meanwhile, I am enjoying my Skittles goodies. Of course, I will share my wealth with my family and friends. Taste the rainbow!

#LiveLegendary – Heineken Party in Toronto

#LiveLegendary Heineken Experience

This past Thursday, I was invited to attend this special Exclusive VIP Party, hosted by Heineken Canada. It has a theme and the hashtag was #LiveLegendary. The invite indicated that Heineken wants us to open our world, be legendary and celebrate some of the most unique views of Toronto.

Quite honestly, I have always been a fan of Heineken beer. I love the package, the branding and most importantly, the taste. A few years back, I was in Amsterdam, Netherlands and took a tour of the Heineken Experience. It was an interactive tour through the beer giant’s history in a former brewery, with a tasting room finale as part of the experience. I had been to many brewery tours and by far, Heineken Experience was my favourite. It’s fun, interactive and have the most advanced technology that makes you remember the history and the evolution of the Heineken beer. I recalled making my own 15 seconds of music video in that building (no joke).

So….I was super excited to attend this Heineken “Legendary” invite-only party and I hope it can recapture some of my great memories back in Amsterdam. As I was reading the invite, the location was 130 Adelaide Street West. To be honest, I have attended so many events and parties but I have not been to an event that is being held at 130 Adelaide Street West. As I goggled it more, it turns out to be a modern, relatively new financial building. I was impressed because I was thinking “How did they convince the building management to let them turn the building into a party scene?”.  But more importantly, I was impressed the event planner chose this venue because it’s new and it’s fresh.

MoKenny, my manager was my plus one. Before we headed to the building, I was wondering how would we know where the entrance was? Look no further, as our cab gradually approached the building, you could clearly see the green lights flashing outside the entire building. There was no way anyone would miss the spot. Most week nights, the financial district is usually quite quiet but as the crowd slowly assembled into a long line, the area was popping! You could see pedestrian stopped by & asked the crowd what’s happening inside, they just curious and want to know (to the marketing team, great job in getting people’s attention). There were two long lines, one for general admission (apparently, some lucky peeps got to buy tickets) and there was a VIP line, which of course, you all know how much MoVernie loves Exclusive VIP treatment. Although, we were Exclusive VIP, there was quite a bit of an unusal wait outside. Not sure why, perhaps it took a bit of time to get everyone warmed up with the entry process. Nevertheless, the weather wasn’t cold and my anticipation to get inside overcame the relatively longer wait. So, I was cool with that.

Finally, it was our turn, the moment I told the staff my name, she recognized my name and said “Of course I recognized that name”. It was quite special and I appreciated that gesture.  She gave us the Heineken wrist band and a few drinking tickets. Security inspected us and off we entered into the building.  I worked in the financial district myself so I have a good picture what a typical financial building looks like. But to my surprise! The organizer did an extreme great job in transforming the entire space into quite a Legendary Heineken Experience. I couldn’t recognize one bit of the original business layout.

#LiveLegendary Heineken Experience

The moment we walked into the building, we could hear fast beats of music sound. The lovely Heineken ladies informed us that the famous Swedish DJ Eric Prydz will be spinning music later in the evening. We thought that was cool. Then, as we walked around, we spotted a big square bar counter, you could basically ordered Heineken beer from every angle of the square bar area. If you want a fresh pint of beer, the nice hostess could pour the pint for you in a tall glass. However, that will take longer time. If you don’t want to wait, there were Heineken bottles that you could redeem with your drinking tickets. I think drinking tickets were provided and not open bar, mainly because the organizer didn’t want peeps to drink too much and hope they would drink responsibly. But more importantly, there were general admission peeps which I don’t think the tickets include unlimited beer, therefore, if peeps want to drink more, they can purchase beer at $4 a bottle. $4 a bottle of Heineken, which you and I both know it’s very reasonable priced. Most clubs will charge you double the price at around $8-9, especially its foreign beer.

#LiveLegendary Heineken Experience

As we explored the area and scouted around, there was a coat-check area. There was a security central area. And if we want to go to the washroom, we had to take the elevator. The friendly security guard will open the elevator door for you, at times, they would even escort you up to the floor building to access the washroom. We are talking about premium service. How often do you get to go to the washroom with security escorts and taking an elevator? I thought it was cool.

As we entered the central area, there were a number of beautiful ladies wearing green tight dress, welcoming the crowd. The space was quite a good size with an elevated DJ stage and a big TV screen behind it. It’s just like a big indoor EDM platform. This was where the popular Swedish DJ Eric Prydz pumped up the crowd with his beats and tunes! As we walked further into the area, there was a black wooded wall, displaying the hashtag #LiveLegendary and also displaying some of the amazing views Toronto has to offer.

#LiveLegendary Heineken Experience

We also saw an elevated VIP area for VIP goers and also another bar counter for peeps to order more Heineken beer. This party won’t be the same without food. Not to worry, the organizer provided a number of food stations at the back to fill your tummies. Food items from around the world, including pork skewers, beef sliders, hot dogs, fish n chips, asian rice paper veggie rolls and much more.

#LiveLegendary Heineken Experience

In addition to my love of this venue, I was also very impressed with the crowd. Since I have attended so many events and parties, most of the time, I would see the same group of peeps again and again. The only difference would be different events in different venues. Sometimes, it would be quite boring meeting the same crowd over and over again. Not this time, there was a good representation of different demographics. You could see young professionals, EDM music goers, beer lovers and only a handful of media people. I love that. I think the organizer did a great job with their guest lists to invite a number of crowds to integrate them to generate an amazing Heineken Experience. Most importantly, you could tell that this crowd were well-behaved, stayed classy and not looking to cause troubles, which I greatly appreciated!

#LiveLegendary Heineken Experience

As DJ Eric Prydz continued to pump out sick beats, you could see the crowd were excited and were having a great time, dancing the night away and jumping up & down with the sick visual light effects. I bumped into a few good peeps, including Joallore (@ClickFlickca). Make sure you followed this guy. He is a friendly and interactive guy on Twitter and he will chat with you no matter what. ClickFlickca told us that retired TFC player, Dwayne De Rosario (DeRo) and Olympian Donovan Bailey were here near the food station. When I heard the name, Donovan Bailey, yes, I still remembered his historic race from 0-100 in 9.84 seconds (yes, for some reason I just remembered that magic number). And of course, I met DeRo a few times in previous events that I looked forward to chat with them again.

#LiveLegendary Heineken Experience

As MoKenny & I walked over, we introduced ourselves to Donovan and chatted with DeRo as well. Donovan was so genuine and down-to-earth. We chatted and talked about his winning race at SkyDome against American Michael Johnson. Donovan still got game with his radiant signature smile. We asked to take a photo with him and without hesitation, he accepted. He even asked DeRo to be in the picture with us.

The evening ended on a good note and I thanked ClickFlick for being such a good sport to inform us that the Sporting Greats were in the building. This evening was definitely LEGENDARY. It brought back lots of good memories of my visit to the Heineken Experience in Amsterdam. The evening made me felt like I was in Europe. I love the venue, love how well-organized the entire party was run. The crowd size was perfect, not over crowde, unlike many other events hosted by other organizers. This was kept in a reasonable size and keeping it Exclusive VIP.

I look forward to the next Heineken Experience, whether it’s in Toronto or elsewhere, they sure know how to throw a #Legendary party! I received tons of text messages, tweets and instagram messages later in the wee hours from my friends and followers on how envy they were that I had attended this special event! Thank you to the organizer for the kind hospitality and invited me and MoKenny to this event.

It really “Open Our Minds”!

Globe Life Park – Texas Rangers (MoVernie Travel & Tourism)

This past April, we took a trip to Dallas, Texas, then did a roadtrip from Dallas to Austin and followed by a visit to San Antonio. As many of my peeps know that I love wearing my beloved Toronto Raptors gear and travel to different places, to showcase and give more exposure to my beloved NBA team.

During the road trip, we decided to make a stop to Arlington to check out the state-of-the-art AT&T Stadium, it’s a relatively new NFL stadium which is home for the Dallas Cowboys. Two blocks from AT&T Stadium, is the Globe Life Park, home of the baseball team, Texas Rangers. One of the streets is named under Hall-of-fame pitcher, Nolan Ryan. We decided to walk around the stadium even though our trip was a few weeks before the start of the baseball season.

Knowing that the Toronto Blue Jays are playing in Texas right now against the Texas Rangers, I thought it would be a great idea to share some of my photos so you have a greater idea what Globe Life Park looks like.

Go Jays Go!

I hope they can even the series today and come back home for game #5. Let’s go Blue Jays!

Mazda CX-3 GT AWD – MoVernie First Drive

This past weekend, I went to the Mazda Canada Headquarter and picked up a nice hot ride, which was the all-new 2016 Mazda CX-3 GT AWD. The moment I saw the CX-3, I was in love! The ride was in the “Soul Red” body paint. I am usually not a red car type of person but Mazda has successfully developed this special red colour that they can call it uniquely it’s own invention, it’s a special red!

I think it’s love at first sight as from any angle, front, side and back, this car loves amazing! The best part has yet to come, the moment I used the keyfob to open the door, to my surprise, what a beautiful interior! It is by far one of the best use of rich material and colour combinations that I have seen in a car. The use of leather, suede, metal and carbon fiber looking type of material were used to give the CX-3 a high-tech, sporty and futuristic look. It feels way more expensive than it’s asking price. And the best part? The use of white, black and raspberry colour combo throughout the entire cabin. The stitching along the dashboard, oh mine, super thoughtful by the designers.

I can’t wait to take this car for a spin and I will be driving this car for a week, attending to various cool events and places. Stay tuned for my in-depth driving experience at a later date. For now, check out some of the photos that I took with this gorgeous 2016 Mazda CX-3 GT AWD.

CNE 2015 – What’s New This Year?

In case you haven’t been to CNE this year yet, you still have about a week left to visit. Honestly, it’s not something you will miss out but I do think it’s a great festival for you and your loved ones to relax, grab a bite, try some new rides and just having a calm and collected day before school starts.

IMG_4525 - Copy

I still recall those days when I was still in school, I had a great time at the CNE but also the reality kicked in when I realized CNE also signify that I have to go back to school. CNE is famous for wacky new food items that will wow you for all the weird reasons. Many food vendors will try to think out-of-the-box and wanted to shovel all the weird ingredients that may not make sense and try to put them into your stomach. Food items that created lots of buzz include Timbits poutine, Bison sausage poutine, double donut burger, etc.

Personally, the Timbits poutine was disappointing to say the least, it’s just purely a bunch of Timbits placed at the bottom of the coffee cup, toppled with whip cream or ice cream of some sort, it lacks flavour and both items didn’t blend well for my taste.

Timbit Poutine

The bison sausage poutine was my pick, sausage was chewy and tender, gravy on the hot fries were top notch.

Double donut burger, it looks nasty from an appearance standpoint but when I got a bite on it, it actually worked well. Must be the sweetness of the donut bun mixed well with the salty beef patty.

And as usual, you get those game booths located outside the buildings. You have water gun, roll the ball, darts, whack a mole, etc. This year lineup of plush toys include The Minions; Big Care Bears (I mean bigger than normal human beings); Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and much much more. Back in the days, my bro and I loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and there was a fishing game. My dad wanted to win a medium sized Michelangelo for us. So, he asked the staff how to win. The dude thought my dad was some guy who possibly wouldn’t know what to do. 5 minutes in, my dad used his amazing dexterity to pick out the red fish out of hundreds of blue fishes and he won the Michelangelo for me. I will always remember that and still have that plush toy in my room.

As always, there were tons of midway rides that your kids or yourself would appreciate. In one particular ride, which I highly recommend is the “Skyride”, it’s basically a ride that stretches from one side of the BMO Field and runs all the way to the Direct Energy Centre, approximately 15 ft above ground. It’s especially beautiful at night, seeing the BMO Field upclose, the Ferris wheel upclose and flashing lights were amazing. Each stretch costs you $5 per person but it’s worth it, to be high up in the air, overlooking the CN Tower and seeing human beings walking beneath you, it’s a great feeling. And oh yes, and I am scare of heights so that’s shows you how much I love this ride, overcoming my biggest fear.
