Raptors vs Pacers – Playoff Prediction

12743838_10153285957331976_7014033676658724393_n

A number of peeps want to know my prediction for the Raptors vs Pacers series.

My MoVernie Prediction? Raptors in 6.

2016 is the year the Raptors will shine & get pass playoff round #1.

And this will also be the first time in franchise history that Toronto will win and take Game #1, which they have never done in the franchise history. Believe it or not, that’s freaky.

Here is the breakdown on the strengths and weaknesses for both Raptors & Pacers:

Toronto Raptors

Strengths:

  1. Solid starting 5: Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan are all-star this year and both have been the backbone of this team. In fact, one of the best guard tandem in the NBA this year. Newcomer DeMarre Carroll (before getting injured) blend in well with the group, doing what he does best, guarding the opposition top dogs. Luis Scola or Patrick Patterson played well in various periods of times over the season. They may have their flaws but each of them bring something unique to the table. Last but not least, manning the centre, Jonas Valanciunas got 4th quarter minutes this year with his improved defense and more complete, all-around offensive skills down the stretch of every game.
  2. Deep Depth of Bench Players: Raptors also have deep bench. Coach Casey has a number of players who can be slotted in different slots and be able to contribute in many different ways and looks.

3) Home Court Advantage: Whether the Raptors fans are inside the ACC or outside the ACC (aka Jurassic Park), the fans are noisy, full of energy and full of passion. That is a loud place to play against, it definitely affect the oppositions.

X-Factor: Norman Powell and DeMarre Carroll. I know it’s too much to ask a rookie to play an important role in the playoffs but I truly believe in Powell, who can shoot 3’s, play defense, drive inside for a nice layup or a slam dunk. He is fearless. That’s what I like, a guy who isn’t hesitate to take the shot or afraid to step up his game, while doing it quietly.

Meanwhile, Carroll, the $15M addition over the summer, despite injury, will still be important to guard guys like Paul George or Monta Ellis

Weakness:

  1. Coach Casey: Casey often has questionable rotation and stubborn on who to put in or out, despite a bench player could be shooting the lights out. Casey also like to stick with the same starting 5, which is quite predictable. If Casey continues to be out coached or fail to make good adjustment during the game or the entire playoff series, Raptors will be kick out the 3rd time in a row.

Raptors GM Masai Ujiri had said that whether to re-sign Casey or not does not depend whether if he can guide the team to the next round. To be honest, that was just full of bullshit. Remember, would any GM be stupid enough to say anything to affect the mental part of a team heading to the playoffs? Let’s sit down and think about this, would Masai tell the reporters that “Yes, if Casey get kick out of Round 1, he is gone?” before the eve of the playoff series? Most likely not, let’s use common sense here.

  2. Raptors have not won game #1 ever in franchise history. Will history repeats itself or become a new curse for the franchise? We will find out.

Indiana Pacers

Strength:

Coaching. What Raptors lacks in coaching is a major gain for the Pacers. Pacers major strength is strong coaching in Frank Vogel. Vogel has been a great coach guiding the Pacers year-in, year-out. Look at his roster this year, other than Paul George and Monta Ellis, there basically not much in the roster that you would call stars or core groups, but they get the job done and made the playoffs.

Think about this, their starting point guard, is George Hill, who only averages 3.4 assists per game this season. Are you kidding me? A starting point guard with only 3.4 assists is in the starting lineup and the team is making the playoffs. That’s because Vogel runs a system that guys like Ellis and Paul George can be a point man.

If Vogel wants to go small, Coach Casey better find a way to counteract Vogel’s tactics. Will Casey be out coach again? We will find out.

Weakness:

Weak bench: The roster is relatively weak compared to the deep bench players the Raptors got.

X-Factor: I really like Jordan Hill over the years and I think he will be a key contributor and expect way more playing minutes in this playoff. This guy can shoot and defend and grab key rebounds.

Anyhow, my MoVernie Prediction, Raptors in 6!

Raptors vs Pacers NBA Playoffs – Key to Success

10703998_10152330064471976_7046709045052859352_o (1)

First of all, congratulations to the Toronto Raptors for making the playoffs, shattering a number of new franchise records and finishing 2nd place in the Eastern Conference.

It’s a luxury for Raptors fans to know that their team has pretty much secure a playoff spot way back in December. Remember those times when back in the days we wouldn’t even know if we make the playoffs until the last game is played? Those days are long gone! Not any more, this Raptors team have depth, experience, consistent team winning performance.

However, franchise records are sexy and awesome, but these accolades are meaningless if the Raptors get kick out of the 1st round yet again. So, to me, the motto is…”Round 2 or Go Home!”.

I am a realistic guy, if Raptors make it out of the 1st round of the playoffs this year, I am happy, it’s a goal accomplished. It’s a baby step moving forward, as long as there is progress, I am happy.

Below are some of the areas that I think are KEY to Raptors success to get out of 1st round:

  1. Coach Casey needs to make good adjustment

In the past few playoff seasons, Coach Casey has a habit of sticking to its starting roster even when the roster don’t seem to be clicking. He has a stubborn nature of not making any roster changes to the starting lineup, not even bother to shake things up during the game, making things super predictable for the oppoents to guess what’s coming next from the Raptors. A great example was when the Raptors got swept by the Wizards last year.

There is absolutely no more excuse for Coach Casey to fail yet again, that’s because Raptors GM Masai Ujiri had given Casey lots of options this season. The weakest link from last year’s roster was at the SF spot. Not this year, Masai went out and address this issue with the addition of DeMarre Carroll. Despite Carroll is slowly returning into form from his months long of injuries, his strong defense against opponents’ top dog such as Paul George or Monta Ellis shouldn’t be a problem for Carroll. Furthermore, if Casey wants some outside shooting, Terrence Ross has improved his 3pter shot this year. Want some more aggressive defense and energy? No problem, throw in the 6’9″ James Johnson. Better yet, on a surprising turn, rookie of the month in April, Norman Powell added grit, defense, size, 3pter and scoring in the paint. The BEST part about Powell? He is fearless, that’s what we need.

With such an in-depth roster of players for Casey to choose from, Casey has no excuse for failing because he has so many different options, giving different looks and rotation against the Indiana Pacers, who has a relative weaker bench than the Raptors.

  2. Can All-Star DeMar DeRozan finally step up his game during the playoffs?

DeMar DeRozan has clearly improved year-after-year with his spin moves and shots during the regular games. He has definitely mature and master his crafts this year. Although, DeMar is a great regular season stats guy, he has yet to flourish in the playoffs.

In the playoffs, it’s a different game. The opponents’ defense will be tighter, they are more aggressive, they will double team DeMar more frequently. They will give DeMar less space and time to aim and shoot.

Whether the Raptors can get pass the 1st round will heavily depend on the ability DeMar in making adjustments and being able to mix up his scoring repertoire during the playoffs. He needs to shoot 3’s, shoot in the paint, drive to the hoop and draw fouls.

MEMO to Demar: If the ref isn’t giving you the call, don’t stand around and whine or get piss off, just stay focus and get back to defense and just keep going at it. Most often, he doesn’t drive when refs stopping giving him the call. And when his outside shots aren’t falling and he isn’t driving to the hoop, he usually disappear.

Kyle Lowry, without a doubt is the heart and soul and leader of this team. We don’t even have to doubt his heart and passion. Even if the team is down 20 pts, Lowry will still give it his all to the dying seconds. Lowry and DeRozan are best friends, but no matter how good the friendships, a batman will need a robin. Can Lowry continue to be fine with DeRozan not able to complement him and disappear in the playoffs and continue have to carry the team on his back?

Believe it or not, this is the free agent year for DeMar DeRozan, is he a max player? Should Raptors re-sign DeMar for a max contract? This will be a tough question. Would GM Masai wants to lock up a guy with max contract who may not be the game changer year after year with mediocre playoff performances? This playoff will be KEY for DeRozan to show what he got.

12803213_10153313420181976_9000563107621746571_n

3. Raptors MUST win Game #1

Believe it or not, throughout the entire Raptors history, as accordingly to RealGM playoff stats, Raptors have NEVER won game #1 in the entire franchise history for every playoff series. Other than year 2000-2001 when Raptors came back to beat the Knicks and then lost to the 76ers, every playoff series that Raptors lost game #1, they lose the entire series.

Although winning game #1 doesn’t mean they win the whole series,  but it is extremely important for Raptors to take game #1 to set the tone for the rest of the series, get settle down and start believing in themselves.

Game #1 may not be as important for other teams but definitely a KEY factor for the Toronto Raptors if they want to go to the 2nd round.

If Raptors able to check off the 3 key points I have mentioned above, the chances to go to the 2nd round is looking super bright!.

Best of luck! Go Raptors!

2016 #FORDNAIAS Exclusive Media Trip – Day 1 (Itinerary) – MoVernie

cropped-mvlogo3

For the second consecutive year, I was invited by Ford Canada to attend the 2016 Ford North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) Digital Summit. It’s an Exclusive VIP Event organized by Ford Motors, flying in the selected Digital Influencers from around the world to meet together and cover one of the largest auto shows in the world that is happening from January 11-24, 2016. I was one of the lucky exclusive Canadian Digital Influencers representing Canada.

It’s a 3-day Media Trip Event. First of all, let me start off with a summary of my Ford NAIAS Day-1 Itinerary so that you have a bigger picture of how my media event went.

Day 1 – Ford NAIAS Media Trip

1) Woke up early at 3:30 am to get to the Toronto Pearson Airport.

2) Landed at the Detroit Airport (DTW) at around Sunday 8:00 am.

3) Once landed, out of the gate, walked within the airport, saw the Westin Hotel entrance. Didn’t even have to walk outside and I had already arrived at the hotel!

IMG_4577

4) Westin Hotel was where all the Ford NAIAS Digital Influencers were staying throughout the rest of this media trip. Super convenient, just a short walk within the airport.

5) Check in at the front desk.

6) Entered to my beautiful hotel crib. Big windows overlooking at the airport. A view of the airplanes right in front of me. How often you got a view like this? Meanwhile, I heard no noise as the hotel was built with strong audio proof materials.

IMG_4582.JPG

7) Since I arrived early in the morning, the Ford NAIAS Hospitality Lounge hasn’t opened yet. The restaurant hasn’t opened yet either. So, I ordered room service for my power breakfast as I was super hungry. I had not eaten anything since I woke up at 3:30 am to get to the airport.

IMG_2202

8) Unpack my luggage.

9) Took a nice hot shower.

10) Power breakfast arrived at my hotel crib.

11) Did some social media  work in my hotel room.

12) Took a long nap. By the way, the mattress, pillows at the Westin Hotel were super comfy and cozy. I had an amazing sleep.

13) Woke up around 4:00 pm, walked downstairs to the Ford Hospitality Lounge to greet the friendly Ford Staff. Said hi to many familiar faces. Picked up my official Ford NAIAS 3-day itinerary schedule book as well as the 2016 NAIAS Auto Show Credential.

IMG_4621

14) Greeted my other fellow Ford NAIAS Digital Influencers. Some familar faces and also new faces. Set around and grabbed some snacks and beverages.

15) Got back to my hotel room and got dressed as we were heading to the Ford NAIAS Party being held at the Ford Field, home of the NFL Detroit Lions.

16) Hop on the bus to Ford Field.

IMG_4622

17) Lots of hors d’oeuvres & cocktails and drinks inside the main entrance of Ford Field.

18) Meet & greet other Digital Influencers from around the world. In particular, before I attended this Ford NAIAS Media Trip, I knew someone named “Vernon Chan” was on this trip as well. What are the chances to have someone who shares the same unique name as me and with a last name only differ by one less letter “g”? So, we met. Meet Vernon Chang and Vernon Chang. LOL

IMG_4669

19) Ford Executives went on the stage and introduced themselves to the crowd. They thanked everyone for coming to this Ford NAIAS Digital Influencers Media Trip.

IMG_4665

20) The Ford Executives also gave the attendees a glance on what we were expected to see at this year’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) and during this Ford NAIAS Media Trip. They also touched on some of the future automotive trends, technologies and innovations that we would expect to see in the near future on vehicles that impact our daily lives.

21) A group of us wandered around the football stadium, taking photos from the stands of the beautiful Ford Field.

IMG_4649

22) We all moved up to the 2nd level of Ford Field to enjoyed the official buffet dinner hosted by Ford Motors.

IMG_4677

23) Lots of delicious food from salmon, roasted beef, huge meat balls, pasta and all other delicious food. Also, I got to try various local beer from the Motor City.

24) We got to take an elevator to head to the actual football field. But before we do that, we got to check out the Visitors Locker Room.

IMG_4690

25) Then, we checked out the Detroit Lions Locker Room. (I still can’t believe we were given access to see what the locker room looks like, as I don’t get to see it on TV, this is Super Exclusive VIP).

IMG_4698

26) Finally, the moment we been all waiting for, the opportunity to jog out from the big tunnel (the tunnel you often seen the entire football team jog out to the field).

27) We all got to walk and run and jog on the field.

IMG_4654

28) I got to kick the official football, a chance to experience what it was like to kick a field goal in front of the large crowd. Better yet, I got to feel the turf and seeing myself on the jumbotron.

IMG_2214

29) Hopped on the coach bus and headed back to the Westin Hotel.

30) Got back to my hotel crib and changed into comfy clothes.

31) Walked down to the bar area to mingle with the other Ford NAIAS Digital Influencers, but more importantly, to meet and greet some of the Influencers who had arrived later in the evening. Wanted to introduce myself and get to know them before the next morning.

TFC vs Rapids – Winmar Toronto Private Suite Box Event

This past Saturday, I was invited as an Exclusive VIP by Winmar Toronto to attend its corporate event, which was to attend the Toronto FC vs Colorado Rapids game at the BMO Field. A few days before, one of the Winmar Toronto drove to my work place and hand delivered the Private Suite TFC ticket as well as a VIP parking pass that allowed me to park underground but close to the BMO Field. Let me tell you, Winmar Toronto is great at what they do, which is providing restoration services with its expertise. But I also think they are thoughtful and provide some of the top notch excellent service that is above and beyond.

The weather during the game was a bit unstable so I was very grateful that Winmar Toronto took care of me and also took care of my car. My 2016 Mazda CX-3 GT AWD was nicely parked underground so when it was pouring rain, my ride was still nice and dry. Since the TFC football game will proceed rain or shine, I was glad that Winmar Toronto hosted the event in a private box suite so that when it was raining, we weren’t affected at all because we had a roof in the suite. Meanwhile, the TFC fans were soaking wet wearing pachos (FYI – umbrellas aren’t allow in the spectators stands).

The TFC took an early 3-0 lead in just the 1st half of the match. All game long, we had loads of food and beverages to allow us to enjoy the game. List of food goes on and on but in particular, they were serving sushi platter, jumbo shrimps, chicken souvlaki, chicken tenders, greek salad, spring rolls, veggie dip, nachos, popcorn, cookies. Oh man, did I mention ice cream bar? Ice cold beer and other cold beverages were being served throughout the game.

It’s been a while I last went to a TFC game, so it was nice to attend this game, especially I heard they are trying to make the playoffs for their very 1st time in franchise history and this year, they have a hot goal scorer named Sebastian Giovinco who scored 2 goals during this match alone.

I would like to thank you Winmar Toronto for the kind Exclusive VIP invite and they definitely came through for me and the rest of the attendees.

And MoVernie is outta here!

Kia Gear Up Event in Barcelona, Spain – Day 5 (MoVernie FC Barcelona & Beach Tour)

The Kia Gear Up event is a 4 days, 3 nights trip to Barcelona, Spain, that consists lots of fun and adventurous activities for the global ambassadors to experience. On my Day 1 MoVernie BLOG, I have shared to you my first day tour around the city of Barcelona. On Day 2 of my MoVernie BLOG, we got to wear our personalized Kia Gear Up racing uniform & helmet. Day 3 is another special day, driving a Kia vehicle at different check points around the busy streets of Barcelona. It felt like “The Amazing Race” in Kia Edition. On Day 4, when the Kia GearUp Event was completed, I stayed for 2 more days to sightsee and toured around Barcelona a little bit more. And on Day 5, I decided to check out the famous football stadium called Camp Nou, home of the popular FC Barcelona team. Every day is special and different. Just like Kia’s slogan, “The Power to Surprise!”

Let me tell you a funny real story. A Twitter Follower knew I was flying to Barcelona for the Kia Gear Up Event. So he told me that I should visit Camp Nou. Quite honestly, I don’t know much about football in Europe, I only know a little bit about football during World Cup but they are represented by countries such as Team England, Team Spain, etc. I wouldn’t know the specific ball clubs. So, I asked my follower, “Why would I want to visit a camp site?”. He was laughing so hard on Twitter and replied “It’s not a camp site, it’s the home of the FC Barcelona, peeps go crazy about this team. It’s only called “Camp Nou”. It was a memorable tweet conversation indeed. And off I went on my last day of this Barcelona trip to Camp Nou and trust me, this Camp Nou experience didn’t disappoint.

Check out the photos below to see what I did during Day 5 of this Kia Gear Up Journey.

By sharing the photos and captions, I hope everyone can get a sense of what’s it like at the Kia Gear Up event and feel as if you are participating the fun activities with me 🙂

At the Hotel Curious, the hotel that I stayed, they also provide massages. I got one and it’s $50 Euro for an hour of service, which I think it’s a great deal.

Liceu Metro Subway Station

After the massage, I took the Metro to go to Camp Nou, home of the football club FC Barcelona. This station is called “Liceu”. It’s quite beautiful.

Meeting up some new friends that I met via a mutual buddy. Meet Jeff & Anna. Both awesome people and made me felt very welcome in Barcelona.

Salmon lunch

I ordered a very nice, tender and fresh salmon.

Stiges beaches

My new friends Jeff and Anna suggested me to take a 20 minute train ride to go to this beautiful area called “Sitges” because it has nice beaches. So I did and purchased a ticket to explore!

Train Station in Barcelona

Waiting for the train to arrive.

Sitges beaches

My friends were right! Only 20 minutes of train ride away, I felt like I was in a different city. Sitges was gorgeous and it’s slower pace, as compared to the busy downtown Barcelona. Look how beautiful the historic buildings were in Sitges.

What a relaxing area! I was glad that I made the trip to Sitges. I thank my new friends for the kind recommendations.

La Rambla

In the evening, after I walked out of my Hotel Curious, walked a block to La Rambla. I saw lots of police officers and barricades. I wasn’t sure what’s going on, so I went and explore. It was a large crowd of happy FC Barcelona fans celebrating their beloved team for winning the division title.

FC Barcelona Celebration

Can you imagine this? I visited the Camp Nou football stadium in the morning and now celebrating with the fans. What an experience!

Smashfest 2014 – Ping-Pong Tournament With NHL Players & Celebrities (Charity Event)

Yesterday evening, me and my crew attended and covered one of the hottest events of the summer called Smashfest. This was the third year Smashfest had been running and it will continue to get bigger and better every year. Smashfest is an exclusive party that brings together NHL stars and other celebrities for a ping-pong themed night in downtown Toronto, being held at Steam Whistle Brewery’s historic Roundhouse.

Guests who paid for the tickets got to mix and mingle with a number of past and present NHL players. Foods, wine and SteamWhistle beer were provided throughout the night. Some selected lucky guests also got to play in a ping-pong tournament with the NHL players, playing to win the Smashfest Trophy. Defending champion, Minnesota Wild Stephane Veilleux defended his title again against Vancouver Canucks Alex Burrows. Smashfest was hosted and organized by New York Rangers, Dominic Moore who wanted to raise awarenss and funding to support two very important causes: concussion, as well as rare cancer research.

Raptors Set Franchise Record With Most Home Wins in a Season

Yesterday, I was grateful to witness history as the Toronto Raptors beat the Milwaukee Bucks by a score of 110-100 to have a franchise record of 48 wins and counting (since Raptors have one more game to go against the Knicks in New York on Wednesday).

Nobody would expect this Toronto squad to do so well beginning of the season and what a turn-around after the Rudy Gay block buster trade. Life is good as a Raptorfan right now. We are in the playoffs baby!

Last night, we also got to see the newly minted 2013-2014 Atlantic Division Banner hanging high above at the Air Canada Centre, joining our 1995 inaugural banner and the 2006-2007 Atlantic Division Banner. It’s about time we got another item to our currently bare Raptors collection.

I was very fortunate that one of sponsors gave me last minute tickets to be sitting in those awesome seats. We were sitting 2 rows near the centre court, just behind the media and in-game announcer section. We felt like we were in the action. The speed of the game was quicker, the size of the NBA players were bigger. It was an awesome view and unbelievable experience. My best seats were still the courtside seats a few years back when I saw Tim Duncan inbounding the ball right in front of us, but these seats were awesome as it was a memorable night to be remembered! I cherished every moment!

Go Raptors Go! See you in the playoffs!

See below for some action shots that I took at our seats at the game last night!

The 63rd Annual Rogers Conn Smythe Sports Celebrity Dinner and Auction took place on Thursday, February 27th, 2014 at the Toronto’s famous Royal York Hotel. They had a list of solid 2014 Celebrity Guests who gave their valuable time and gave back to the communities in support of this special charitable event. In fact, some of these celebrities such as all-time Blue Jays great, Carlos Delgado, specifically flew in Toronto so he could be part of this special occasion. The list of celebrity guests include Carlos Delgado (Baseball Player), Geraldine Heaney (Hockey Player), James Hinchcliffe (Indy Car Race Car Driver), Perdita Felicien (Hurdler), Dave Stewart (Baseball Player), Scott Milanovich (CFL Coach), Gary Roberts (Hockey Player), Matt Hughes (Martial Artist), Stefan Charles (NFL Player), and Natalie Spooner (Female Gold Olympian). This year’s dinner host was Gerry Dee!

Special thanks to the Easter Seals Committee for the invitation and our crew and I attended the media conference where I got to interview some of these celebrities as well as the Easter Seals Ambassadors about being part of this great charitable organizations and the meaning of giving back and in support of the youth and young adults in Ontario with a physical disability.

Stay tuned for my later publications on the interviews I had with some of these celebrities!

Here are the photos we took at the Media Conference and photos of my interviews with these celebrities:
